The Story

Why They Came To Settle Bridgewater Maine.

Early settlers came from Southern New England, from over across the border in the Atlantic Canadian provinces or further away across bridgewater me communitythe pond into Europe. The south division being called Portland Academy, the north half Bridgewater. Land sold off by land grant universities or academies was one way to open up and get northern sections of the vast Maine wood land settled.

Population came slowly and winter weather did not help the fire in the belly to open up the Northern unorganized territories. March 2nd, 1858 Bridgewater  incorporated and Maine became a state in 1820. Bridgewater is 436' above sea level.

How To Get Here

To get to Bridgewater Maine, if heading from the south up Interstate 95 or along US Rt 1, you can't miss this village at the bottom of the hill. US Rt 1 cuts Bridgewater in half with a few roads heading east and west from this Aroostook County main highway artery.

From Canada there is a boundary border crossing from the east. Like all small Northern Maine rural towns, over 14,000 miles of back wood trails provide another way to access Bridgewater using your own power on foot or snow shoe or cross country skis.
